Yesterday may have been Back to the Future's actual 30th anniversary, but in true futuristic fashion, the City of Augusta celebrates the day after. To honor Robert Zemeckis' film and its third decade on this planet, the city voted to have Hill Valley become a real place on the map. Though, just for one day.
The Butler County Times-Gazette, via Slashfilm, reported on the news. Mayor Matt Childers and the Augusta City Council to temporarily change the name of their Kansas city, just as their local Augusta Theatre has its own 80th birthday bringing the classic movie series back into the theater.
“This is just a really cool way to showcase one of our greatest community venues," the mayor said to the publication.
Augusta will show not only one, but three of the Back to the Future movies this evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and under one $8 ticket or four admissions for $15. That's not all, of course. Other scheduled activities include a parade, cookout and Marty McFly look-a-like contest at 5 p.m., as well as pictures with a DeLoren from 5:30 until the first movie premieres in front of the historic screen again.
The inspiration came from not only the town's love for the movies, but adding in some fun in a way which would celebrate its town's history and help bring attention to their area.
“We have a clock tower at the end of our round-about and thought this would be a fun way to highlight our town, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the movie, and provide a little extra fun factor,” Michelle Spainhower, manager of the Augusta Theatre, told the local paper.
As any Back to the Future fans know, this is an important year for the franchise, as it is the same year the characters went back to the future in the second film. Jaws 19 isn't likely coming in time, but we may have working self-laced Nikes and hoverboards in time. But don't expect a remake any time soon, however. That is, if Zemeckis can help it, for he said recently the rights to making such a film won't happen until he and writer Bob Gale are dead.
