Lockdown lifted at Washington Navy Yard after unconfirmed reports of active shooter

The Washington Navy Yard was placed on lockdown after police responded to reports of an active shooter on the premises Thursday morning.

The Associated Press noted that a military official said that there had been a report of shots fired and U.S. Navy spokesman Petty Officer 1st Class Pedro Rodriguez confirmed that the Navy Yard was on lockdown.

Despite the reports of a "suspicious person" and shots fired, Reuters UK reported that no shooter was found after police swarmed the Navy Yard and there have not been any injuries.

Officials said that the investigation is still ongoing and nothing can be confirmed at this time.

Several streets in and around the area were also shut down as authorities continue to investigate.

The Navy Yard is the same where a mass shooting took place on Sept. 16, 2013. In that incident 12 civilians were wounded before police shot and killed the gunman identified as Aaron Alexis.

The Navy has released updates on the situation via social media.
