Lena Fayre's 'Is There Only One?' will haunt you and leave you wanting more

In 2013, Lena Fayre released her self-titled EP. In 2014, she released her debut album Oko. Now, Fayre has released yet another EP, featuring five brand new songs off the EP titled, Is There Only One?

Fayre is not mainstream. You won’t hear her songs on a top 40 radio station, but she hardly needs to be featured there among artists like Katy Perry and Sia. Fayre calls her music, “deconstructive pop.” Deconstruction meaning, different from the pop stars one would automatically think of.

“Do You Like That?” is the first song on the new EP. “All my life / been waiting for what I can give to you / All my life / been asking for what you could never give to me,” open the song with her hauntingly beautiful voice. Pairing that with the repeated “I am more than my self-esteem,” and it truly is a haunting piece. Fayre’s synthetic pop rhythms and low notes, followed by falsettos, bring a stirring song, that could be considered what a Lorde/The Weeknd crossover would sound like.

“Possession” follows the same theme as “Do you Like That?” Fayre must really want her listeners to truly listen to her words, for she enunciates them well. The music is low in the background and her voice seems to echo through the speakers.

“I wanted this EP to be more of a narrative,” Fayre said to Artist Direct. “Naturally, I tend to focus on content that is more image-based—sort of a non-tangible style of lyricism. I wanted to tell a specific story of a relationship that was true.”

Fayre said that this EP focuses on a “troubled relationship that ended in a strange way.” Because of this, she focused on modern day relationships and “how we deal with possessions, belonging, and those interpersonal relationships. It’s still something that I am learning. It is a big theme for my life.”

On her VEVO channel, comments are filled with praise and adoration for the 19-year-old singer, who is just so different from the artists that are around nowadays. Fayre comments back to the fans too, expressing her love for them as well.

Is There Only One? has listeners wanting more than the five songs that were released. Not only that, but the EP has listeners wanting to learn more about the 19-year-old from California, who is so unlike the norm.

Is There Only One? is available now, on Spotify.
