'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events' Netflix teaser is a fake

It's only fitting the super awesome Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unforunate Events Netflix teaser would, unfortunately, be a fake. The fan service-heavy teaser was, indeed, a fan-made video, disguised like Count Olaf himself to look like the real deal.

The preview, titled "An Unfortunate Teaser," quickly went viral when it was uploaded yesterday. Although it didn't feature any footage from the upcoming show, it offered little nods and winks to the original 13-part book series throughout its 35-second promo. Images allowed for tons of eyes, Violet's ribbon, Sunny's birdcage, Klaus' glasses and more before showing the shadowy figure of Olaf himself. It was appropriately creepy, willfully dark and tonally fitting to the original source material. But it would seem it was too good to be true.

The first clue was it coming from user Eleanora Poe's page, the sister of Mr. Arthur Poe, who was in charge of the Baudelaire orphans' affairs, instead of Netflix's official account. The logo for the streaming site did come at the end, however, which made some believe this to be just a way to stream up early buzz for the soon-to-be-made series. Alas, this wasn't the case.

With no word yet on who is cast in the new show, which was announced in November, nor word on when production begins or when fans should expect the episodes to hit the site, it'll likely be some time before we see a real teaser for what Netflix is cooking up. Although there was the fairly average 2004 movie bringing the twisted world to life, this is probably the best recreation of Snicket's (a.k.a. Daniel Handler's) material to date. The person in charge, whomever that would be, should feel proud for not only making something that looks this good but fooled enough people to think it was actually real — including ourselves.
