While it looked like Jurassic World clobbered its way through a fourth box office this holiday weekend, the emotions of the moment for the dinosaur movie took the prize away from the true winner. New reports say Inside Out actually scored the #1 spot for the first time in its three-week run.
Just as it was stated in the previous report on the matter, the race between Pixar's latest and the dino-sequel was tight, but the tallies now state the animated family movie won the race by a photo finish. The new number-one scored $29.8 million, while Colin Trevorrow's sequel earned $29.2 million. This goes against yesterday's numbers, which had Jurassic World scoring $30.9 million compared to Inside Out's $30.1 million.
Meanwhile, Terminator Genisys still came in third, but its prospects were even more dour than previously reported. The robotic sequel — in multiple ways — actually earned $27.01 million instead of the $28.7 projected, which makes its five-day total $42.4 million. It would seem those continued sequel hopes look even less likely than they did initially, unless overseas numbers kick this one into overdrive.
On the bright side, Magic Mike XXL did a little better than the previous reports stated. The stripper sequel scored $12.85 million, opposed to the flat $12 million previously calculated, which makes its five-day total $27.8 million. Again, since this one cost a mere $15 million to put together, there's no way Warner Bros. is losing their shirts on this one, but it's good to hear it's doing well — especially considering how much the earnest sequel deserves it.
Considering how tight everything was this weekend, it's not as though these numbers are particularly shocking. Knowing the box office was even less sufficient than previously suggested, however, makes things appear kinda gloomy for the once-towering 4th of July staple. At any rate, Minion, The Gallows and Self/less strut their way into the box office mainframe next week. The latter two shouldn't make much of a dent, but you better believe the Universal animated film will take Inside Out's honor this time next week. Early reports from the animated spin-off in the UK breaking records, and there's a solid chance it'll do the same here. People love those plushy yellow things worldwide.
