Now that the 2015 Emmys nominations are here, it’s time to figure out what’s missing or surprisingly included in the drama categories... and the Lyons will not be happy.
The job of the Television Academy is getting harder and harder as television continues to get better. To make things harder, there are also more outlets for original television show. Netflix is not the only home for streaming original programming. Two streaming shows were nominated in the Drama Series and Comedy Series each. Overall, Netflix shows earned 34 nominations, while Amazon shows got 12.
The most-nominated show was Game of Thrones, which racked up 24 nominations thanks to the technical categories. However, there were an impressive four acting nominations for the show.
Peter Dinklage, who earned the show’s only acting Emmy back in 2011, was once again nominated for Supporting Actor in a drama. Lena Headey got noticed for the second consecutive year, but she will have to compete with her co-star Emilia Clarke (although the two have never shared screentime) for Supporting Actress. Lastly, Diana Rigg was nominated for a third consecutive year for Guest Actress in a Drama.
Most of the drama categories were filled with previous nominees. Jon Hamm will get one final shot at winning an Emmy for Mad Men, but his tough competition includes Jeff Daniels (the now-cancelled The Newsroom) and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards). Netflix somehow managed to get Kyle Chandler a nomination for Bloodline and Liev Schreiber rounds out the category for Ray Donovan.
The lead actress category was completely thrown a curveball. While regular nominees Claire Danes (Homeland) and Robin Wright (House of Cards) are here, Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) were ignored. Instead, we have Tatiana Maslany getting recognition for Orphan Black and Taraji P. Henson is here for Empire. Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss also got nominated, but it doesn’t look like she’s got a chance.
The biggest snub in the drama categories is easy: Where is Empire in the major categories? The biggest new network show from the season did earn 10 nominations, but Henson’s Lead Actress nod was its only acting nod. Empire was not nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and Terrence Howard didn’t get nominated. That’s not a great way to make your host network happy, TV Academy.
Fan’s of FX’s The Americans will also be shocked to see it nowhere among the big categories.
Orange is the New Black did survive the jump to drama series, which it had to make thanks to some dramatic changes announced in February. It was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and Uzo Aduba is up for Supporting Actress.
You can check out the list of nominees right here. The Emmys will be handed out on Fox on Sept. 20.
