On the funnier side of things, there are plenty of fresh faces in the Emmys comedy categories.
Amazon’s Transparent was the most-nominated comedy series with 11, as the show continues to ride the coattails of its double Golden Globe wins. And there were enough new acting nominations to push out The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons and the Modern Family cast.
Yes, the TV Academy finally figured out that ABC’s tired sitcom is getting boring. However, they don’t completely forget about Modern Family. One of the show’s six nominations was for Outstanding Drama Series. The show has won that award five years in a row, so it’s really time they figure out that there are other funny shows. In addition, Ty Burrell landed a Supporting Actor nod.
Veep looks like the big winner though. The series has yet to win Outstanding Comedy Series (obviously), but Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won three years in a row for Lead Actress. She’s got some incredible competition in the Lead Actress category that could stop her from getting a fourth. Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer) and Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie) were nominated for their new shows. Perhaps Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) or Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation) might win for the last seasons of their shows.
The Lead Actor in a Comedy category is also filled with some new faces that should surprise some. Don Cheadle (Shameless), Matt LeBlanc (EpisodeS), William H. Macy (Shameless) and Louie C.K. (Louie) will go up against black-sh’s Anthony Anderson and The Last Man on Earth’s Will Forte. Transparent’s Jeffrey Tambor is also in the mix.
When it comes to snubs, CBS’ The Big Bang Theory is noticeably absent in all the major categories. Mayim Bialik’s nomination for Supporting Actress is the show’s only acting nod this time around. Jim Parsons is usually a shoe-in every year, but he’s nowhere to be found.
Ellie Kemper missed out on a nomination for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but the show did nab an Outstanding Comedy Series nod. Thankfully Tituss Burgess was nominated for Supporting Actor. Hopefully he wins so we can hear “Peeno Noir” performed on stage.
Also, weirdly, Keegan-Michael Key is nominated as a Supporting Actor for Key & Peele. How can you be a supporting actor in a show that carries your name?
You can check out the list of nominees right here and be sure to check out the Drama surprises here. The Emmys will be handed out on Fox on Sept. 20.
