Christina Applegate could have played Elle Woods. In an interview at the Los Angeles premiere for Vacation, the actress revealed that she did receive the scrip, but had to turn it down for fears of being typecast.
Applegate told Entertainment Tonight Monday that she was afraid of taking another dumb blonde role after her breakthrough part as Kelly Bundy on Married... With Children.
“The script came along my way and it was right after I had just finished Married and it was a blonde who in that first script didn't win it but ends up going to Yale, or Harvard, I don't remember,” she recalled. “I got scared of kind of repeating myself.”
“What a stupid move that was, right?” Applegate added.
Reese Witherspoon wound up playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, which came out in 2001. The film was such a hit that it spawned a sequel in 2003. Applegate had some nice words to say about Witherspoon’s performance, even saying that she did better than she ever could.
Applegate can currently be seen in Vacation, which hit theaters last night. She was also recently in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
