It’s been a week since country music stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert announced their divorce, but there’s still questions being raised about it. The latest isn’t a cheating rumor, but about the legality of a judge’s decision to seal the divorce documents.
Shelton and Lambert announced that they ended their four-year marriage on July 20. Shelton filed for divorce on July 6 in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma and the marriage officially ended on July 20.
According to The Oklahoman, the petition, decree and other documents in the case were all sealed by associate district judge John Gardner. The only parts of the case that were allowed to be public were the initials of the two people involved.
However, this may have been against a new state law passed last year that says that civil, divorce and other public court records could only be sealed if there was legitimate reason to keep it private. The judge would be required to publicly announce a sealing order, which did not happen in this case.
“Oh, yeah, they're definitely not following the law on it,” former state Rep. Aaron Stiles, who is an attorney, told the Oklahoman. “I can't imagine a scenario where you would ever seal an entire civil or divorce case.”
Oklahoma City attorney Irven Box also suggested that the singers got special treatment as celebrities, adding that there were “a lot of irregularities” in the divorce.
Since announcing the divorce, Shelton and Lambert have tried to resume their careers. Shelton even performed on Friday.
