The jury has reached a verdict in the trial of James Holmes, the man who shot and killed 12 people at an Aurora, Colorado movie theater in July 2012. While both sides agreed that Holmes was the shooter, the jury had to determine if he was sane or not at the time of the shooting.
The jury has found Holmes guilty in murder of the first degree.
The shooting took place during the morning of July 20, 2012 during midnight screenings of The Dark Knight Rises. He kept theatergoers from leaving the theater as he opened fire, killing 12 and injuring 70 others.
Holmes’ trial began in April. He had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, forcing his defense to prove that he was was not sane at the time of the shooting. The 12 jurors must have found that the defense did not prove that.
As NBC News notes, Holmes faced 24 murder charges, 140 counts of attempted murder and an explosives count. He will be eligible for the death penalty due to the murder charges. The murder charges are double the number of victims because he was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree murder with extreme difference for every victim.
The names of the victims are Jonathan Blunk, Alexander Boik, Jesse Childress, Gordon Cowden, Jessica Ghawi, John Thomas Larimer, Matthew McQuinn, Micayla Medek, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, Alex Sullivan, Alexander Teves and Rebecca Ann Wingo.
