America Ferrera took it upon herself to publicly react towards Donald Trump's announcement presented in New York on June 16.
After Trump's Presidential Campaign Announcement last month, the candidate received numerous responses from NBC, Macy's, and particularly, the latino community.
"Mexico is smart, they've out negotiated us to a fair thee well, they're going to be the capital of automobiles pretty soon the way they're going," Trump stated during his speech. "I respect what they're doing. I think it's great, I like Mexico. I love the Mexican people. I do business with the Mexican people, but you have people coming through the border that are from all over."
The former Ugly Betty star responded to Trump on behalf of the latino community. In a letter published on the Huffington Post yesterday morning, Ferrera thanks Trump for his comments.
"You see, what you just did with your straight talk was send more Latino voters to the polls than several registration rallies combined! Thank you for that," Ferrera said. "Here we are pounding the pavement to get American Latinos to the polls, while your tactic proves most effective. Remarks like yours will serve brilliantly to energize Latino voters and increase turnout on election day against you and any other candidate who runs on a platform of hateful rhetoric."
Among many furious immigrants living in the country who heard Trump's speech, Ferrera is angry at Trump's language towards her own community. "When Mexico sends its people... They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists," Trump claimed about illegal immigrants in the nation.
"I'm talking about people that are from all over that are killers and rapists and they're coming into this country,” Trump added.
As an activist, Ferrera was not afraid to respond. "The truth is, Mr. Trump, that your comments mean that you fail to see that immigrants are what have made this nation. They are at the core of our ideals, and they are the foundation that keeps us afloat," Ferrera said.
"No, Mr. Trump, you may not reduce us to drug dealers and rapists. We are moms and dads, sons and daughters. We are valedictorians and honor students. We are college graduates, bankers, police officers, entertainers, teachers, journalists, politicians and we are the future of America," she continued.
"Thank you for helping us in our work to energize the Latino vote and to usher in our shared future! Keep it up!" Ferrera concluded.
According to ABC News, Ferrera has been active with the Clinton Foundation. She participates in Hilary and Chelsea Clinton's No Ceilings program focusing on expanding opportunities for women.
