Woman hit by bat at Fenway Park suffers severe injuries

Spectators at Friday’s Red Sox vs. Oakland A’s game in Fenway Park became witnesses to a brutal injury.

Evidently, the Oakland A’s Brett Lawrie broke his bat during the second inning. The bat splintered and flew into the stands. Part of it struck a young woman sitting in the third base boxes.

According to CBS News, the woman was with her husband and young son when her injuries were sustained. After receiving some medical attention, she was taken by stretcher out of the stadium, briefly delaying the game. The Boston Globe reported that Officer Rachel McGuire of the Boston police department shared that the woman was rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and one of the guards at the stadium commented about the severity of her injuries.

The Boston Globe also shared the comments of witnesses, including Alex Merlas whom they quoted as saying, “It hit on the forehead to the top of the head . . . it was a blunt trauma and it was a lot of blood. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much blood.”

The Associated Press shared that police described her injuries as life-threatening. Many have expressed their sympathies and concerns, including Red Sox manager, John Ferrell, who stated, "First and foremost, our thoughts and concern, and certainly our prayers, go out to the woman that was struck with the bat, her and her family."
