Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg are back together in first 'Bridge of Spies' trailer

Tom Hanks is back in the experienced hands of Steven Spielberg once again, this time in the Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, written by Joel and Ethan Coen and Matt Chapman.

The film is based on the true story of Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell, Whiplash) , a U-2 spy plane pilot captured by the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, the U.S. has captured Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance, Spielberg’s upcoming The B.F.G.), a Russian spy. Hoping to negotiate a prisoner exchange, the government enlists lawyer James Donovan (Hanks), who isn’t exactly experienced with spies.

Hanks’ sterling supporting cast includes Amy Ryan, Alan Alda, Peter McRobbie (who, we’re pretty sure, is in everything now), Michael Gaston and Billy Magnussen.

Bridge of Spies hits theaters on Oct. 16 and is sure to be an Oscars player. Probably not on the level of 2012’s Lincoln, but it will be nominated in a few categories.

Here’s the trailer:

After this film, Spielberg is set to work on Ready Player One and The B.F.G., an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved novel.
