The Rolling Stones, 'From The Vault: The Marquee Club Live in 1971' Blu-ray/CD review

The Rolling Stones were at their best from 1968 through 1972, releasing Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. It’s arguably the best run a single rock group has ever had creatively. Sticky Fingers just received a long-awaited deluxe remastering job earlier this month and, as a companion release, the group is also putting out a new edition to their From The Vault series.

Released by Eagle Rock Entertainment, the new From The Vault set features a performance at London’s Marquee Club on March 26, 1971. Since the Stones didn’t officially film their early 1971 U.K. tour, this short, 38-minute show is the only way we can see how they performed at the time. It wasn’t actually officially part of that tour, as it was filmed 10 days after it ended for a U.S. broadcast.

The show is only eight songs long, with four of them coming from Sticky Fingers, which hadn’t even been released in the U.K. yet. Indeed, the preview single “Bitch”/“Brown Sugar” wasn’t even released. So audiences were hearing these songs for the first time ever. The two other Sticky Fingers songs performed are “Dead Flowers” and “I Got The Blues.”

They opened the show with Let It Bleed’s “Live With Me” and later performed a 10-minute workout of “Midnight Rambler” from the same album. A cover of Chuck Berry’s “Let It Rock” was thrown in, and a rather interesting take on “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” was performed.

Eagle Rock has been releasing these From The Vault set on what they call “SD Blu-Ray,” which feels a bit pointless. The video is actually in standard definition, but the audio is up to snuff with the best the format has to offer. There’s two audio tracks, including a DTS-HD Master Audio track. In other words, if you’ve got a really great sound system, this is one to blast as loudly as you can. There’s no better way to wake up your neighbors than with Mick Jagger yelling, “Love! It’s a BITCH.”

Since the show is so short, Eagle Rock makes the cost a little easier to take by including a CD of the show. There’s also two extra takes each of “I Got The Blues” and “Bitch.” Lastly, the Blu-ray features an added performance of “Brown Sugar” from the BBC’s Top of the Pops.

Despite the lack of great video - remember, this was filmed for a TV show 44 years ago - this is actually a must-get set for Stones fans, especially those who love the Sticky Fingers material. It’s great to see Mick, Keith Richards and the rest of the group at their best, long before they became a power-house stadium act.

From The Vault: The Marquee Club Live in 1971 hits stores on June 23.
