This episode opened with Kirsten coming home to Camille dishing up homemade lasagna and freshly poured wine as an apologetic “let’s be friends” dinner. Kirsten’s characteristic callous response? “So, this is what ‘sorry’ looks like?”
Kirsten then goes in to work so that she can do the one thing she really wants more than anything else, and that is to stitch into the memories of the man who raised her. It’s not in the cards for her, though, as Maggie interrupts at the last minute to give her a new and urgent case. As angry as Kirsten is about it, she agrees, knowing that Ed’s memories have about 48 hours before they degenerate.
The new case involves the drug overdose of a young girl. At first, it’s not clear as to why this case is so important, except Maggie says that they need to find out where the deadly drug that killed her is coming from so that they can stop it before it becomes wide spread. It is later revealed to Detective Fischer from the L.A.P.D. that the girl was the daughter of a local judge and therefore the case needed to be dealt with swiftly. Of course, that leads into another run in between him and Kirsten.
Kirsten’s stitch into the young girl’s mind was very difficult, because the girl’s memories were still clouded by the effects of the drugs. She was at a rave and was trying to talk to another girl when she was restrained by a man who force fed her the drugs, in effect killing her. Wanting to find out about the place where the rave was held, and who the guy she saw might be, Kirsten dupes Cameron into helping her, again.
When their efforts are unsuccessful, Kirsten gets the idea that they need to go to that night’s rave to find the guy. She talks Cameron into going with her, and as they discuss this in Kirsten’s house, Camille overhears and wants to go too. So, Cameron recruits Linus (one of the other scientists in the program) to go as well.
Seeing them dressed up was pretty entertaining. As expected, things did not go so well at the rave. They were able to confront the guy, but he got away with his girlfriend. She way key. The girl who overdosed, was killed due to her attempts to get the girlfriend to a safe place. As Kirsten is chasing them, along comes Fischer, but this time he intends to arrest all four of them. She is able to talk him out of it by claiming to be part of the secret program and offering to show it to him.
Do you think Maggie was happy about that? Nope, not at all. Then again, she didn’t have much choice as it was already done. Kirsten did have a good point though when she conceded that Maggie couldn’t stop them from doing field work, and they could use some outside support. Maggie reluctantly agreed as did Fischer, so now he’s part of the team. At this point, Kirsten agrees to be stitched into the girl’s memories a second time. This time, she gets a clear look at the guy’s face, as well as seeing an address (not the warehouse in which the rave was held). The address turns out to be the address of the drug dealer.
After they catch the bad guy, the show culminates with Kirsten being told that she cannot stitch into Ed’s memory despite what she was promised. She confronted Maggie about it head on. She figured there was something Maggie didn’t want her to see or know. This may partially be due to his involvement in the development of the Stitchers program, something he did with Kirsten’s real father. Sorry, I forgot to mention that tidbit last week. Anyway, when Kirsten is ready to walk out, Maggie appeals to her inner child. As Maggie describes the criminals they are able to catch and stop as monsters, Kirsten has a flashback to being a little girl in bed and having Ed use a flashlight to check for monsters under it. As the flashback ends, Kirsten looks at Maggie and says, “Well, I never did like monsters. Let’s go get ‘em.” We also got to see a quick flash of the previous stitcher, Marta, thrashing in the tank. I wonder if we’ll find out exactly what happened to her. Or, perhaps I should say I wonder when we’ll find out.
I think this episode got off to a rocky start, but had an overall good “case” to solve. It was somewhat predictable, with Fischer being brought in to the program, all be it sooner than expected. The show still has potential. All we can do is wait and see. Stay tuned: Tuesdays at 9:00 PM EST on ABC Family.
