Mark Romanek to direct 'Norco'

Director Mark Romanek, beyond his music videos, is often known more for the movies he doesn't make than the ones he does. One Hour Photo and Never Let Me Go did come into fruition, but his visions for A Million Little Pieces, A Cold Case, The Wolfman, The Lost Symbol and Cinderella, to name a few, didn't get to be seen. But maybe things will be different for his next project, the upcoming actioner Norco.

Announced in a press release, MadRiver Pictures revealed they'll make Romanek's latest, based on a screenplay by Adair Cole. Marc Butan (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) and Mason Novick (Juno) produce the action film, while Edward Fee executive produces and Michelle Knudsen (500 Days of Summer) co-produces. Inspired by a true '80s North Carona story, the movie tells the story of a California bank robbery and manhunt, where the destruction of 30 police cruisers, the downing of a police helicopter and countless injuries occurred.

“Adair wrote a script that tells this story with a raw, almost matter-of-fact intensity that it makes you feel like you are there," Butan said. "Adding Mark to the mix brings it all home, as he is one of the few filmmakers out there who provides the visual style this piece calls for but also gets the performances from actors."

MadRiver Pictures is a new company recently launched with aspirations to produce three-or-fours wide release movies per year between the $15-50 million price range. Their upcoming projects including A Willing Patriot, starring Liam Neeson, Triple 9, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Kate Winslet, Woody Harrelson, Aaron Paul and Anthony Mackie, The Lost City of Z, starring Charlie Hunnam and the aforementioned Pride & Prejudice & Zombies.

At the moment, no actors, production start or release date were announced.
