Kerry Washington is taking a break from her hit show Scandal to play the star witness Anita Hill in the Clarence Thomas biopic Confirmation.
In 1991, Clarence Thomas succeeded Thurgood Marshall in the Supreme Court and became the second African American to serve in the court.
Anita Hill was a lawyer and worked as one of Thomas’ aides. She was a part of the Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Thomas faced a scandal when Anita Hill accused him of sexual harassing her.
TIME notes that there has been no recorded release date. But it reports that the film will have The Wire star Wendell Pierce playing Clarence Thomas and Avenger actress Cobie Smulders as lawyer Harriet Grant.
The film will also have Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Susannah Grant, who is known for Erin Brockovich. The Hollywood Reporter tells us that the director is rumored to be Rick Famuyiwa who created the Sundance hit Dope. Nothing is set yet.
The HBO TV film may be filmed during Washington’s break time from Scandal.
