In terms of quality, July 17's Ant-Man may be Marvel's biggest gamble. In addition to the whole Edgar Wright debacle, it's a property with less fans today than Guardians of the Galaxy had when it initially came to theaters and even co-star Evangeline Lilly and Paul Rudd's son Jack think the property is stupid. But Marvel has the magic touch these days, and it should make a ton of money regardless. Is it any good, though? It depends on whom you ask.
No reviews were released on the web yet, but the first handful of tweet reactions released the first public reactions to the movie, many courtesy of Comic Book Movies, Slashfilm and The Playlist. Overall, it looks as though more people thought positively than negatively, but those who didn't like it weren't having it at all.
Compared to the early buzz for Avengers: Age of Ultron just a little earlier this year, these responses feel a bit muted, and that movie didn't even turn out to be that good. But it would seem most people are enjoying what they're seeing so far, and this one apparently does a better job at standing on its own. That's certainly a plus.
Here are the very positive ones:
It's charming, hilarious, great action, it's got a tight and engaging story. A great heist film...#AntMan

Ant-Man is more methodical than most Marvel movies but it’s hilarious & a totally great ride. So many fun MCU links too. Another winner.

Two Ant-Man credits scenes, each better than the last.
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) June 26, 2015
It takes ANT-MAN a moment to get cranked up, but once it does, it’s sensational. My favorite third-act of any Marvel movie.

You don't need to have seen all the Marvel movies or read the comics for Ant-Man to be amazing! Perfect for hooking a new Marvel fan!
— Lauren (@MidgetMomma1200) June 26, 2015
Ant-Man makes it easy to hook a new Marvel fan!!It's ok if you have never seen a Marvel movie, this one is great for new fans! #AntManEvent
— Lauren (@MidgetMomma1200) June 26, 2015
Guys, don't worry. #AntMan is good. Like, goooooood. Also, it's the weirdest Marvel movie yet. Weirder than "Guardians of the Galaxy" even.
— John Boone (@jtyboone) June 26, 2015
If I'm not mistaken, #AntMan contains the first reference to #SpiderMan in the MCU.
— John Boone (@jtyboone) June 26, 2015
#ANTMAN is both fun and funny, and just a damn good time. As much as I love #PaulRudd, I have to say .@realmichaelpena steals the show.
— Christina Radish (@ChristinaRadish) June 26, 2015
ANT-MAN is a TON of fun! It's Marvel's version of Ocean's 11. Great cast, slick score and two wonderful post-credits scenes #StayTillTheEnd
— Brian Gallagher (@GallagherMW) June 26, 2015
Ant-Man isn't just great entertainment, it's also a great movie. Marvel's most human film to date. Fantastic.
— Jack Giroux (@JackGi) June 26, 2015
Ant-Man ties into the MCU without using any tangents. Almost all buildup, but that's a part of the fun with heist films. Great script.
— Jack Giroux (@JackGi) June 26, 2015
Ant Man is great. Way better than Age of Ultron. @edgarwright deserves co-director credit. Feels like his movie.
— gregoryellwood (@HitFixGregory) June 26, 2015
Don't want to spoil or hype too much but Ant Man has some great surprises you do not expect. Hope people keep good stuff quiet.
— gregoryellwood (@HitFixGregory) June 26, 2015
"Ant-Man" is hugely entertaining, and a truly significant puzzle piece in the Marvel Universe. This one's got a big sweet heart.
— ImperatorHitFixDrew (@DrewAtHitFix) June 26, 2015
ANT-MAN is fantastic fun with heart, wildly clever set-pieces, and a scene-stealing Michael Pena. It's a movie I want to be friends with.
— Haleigh Foutch (@HaleighFoutch) June 26, 2015
So I saw ANT-MAN & I dug it! Most inventive action scenes yet & tons of heart. A softer, more intimate #Marvel movie and a great family film

Here are some not-quite-as-positive, but still enthusiastic responses:
ANT-MAN is good. Not a disaster like some expected but also not a homerun. Has a *must see* after the end credits scene.
— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) June 26, 2015
The one thing I am sure of after OBSERVE AND REPORT and ANT-MAN is @realmichaelpena needs to do a lot more comedies.
— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) June 26, 2015
A woman who watched Ant Man behind me made no noise during the whole screening, but almost exploded when the post-credit scene came on.
— Todd Gilchrist (@mtgilchrist) June 26, 2015
Oh, Ant Man is pretty good.
— Todd Gilchrist (@mtgilchrist) June 26, 2015
I liked Ant-Man more than I did Avengers: Age of Ultron, mainly because Marvel's doing something different and it works as a stand-alone
— Edward Douglas (@EDouglasWW) June 26, 2015
And here are the Negative Nancys:
Sadly ‘Ant-Man’ falls flat in almost every way. Doesn’t seem like it’s sure of what it wants to be. Not so much bad as it is blah.
— Mike Sampson (@mjsamps) June 26, 2015
#AntMan: Mostly boring with lots of exposition, daddy issues and a splash of wit. Oh! And Paul Rudd's abs. #FemaleGaze
— Courtney Howard (@Lulamaybelle) June 26, 2015
Bring me the documentary on what could have been @edgarwright 's #AntMan vs. the ANT-MAN I just saw. Please!
— Courtney Howard (@Lulamaybelle) June 26, 2015
Overall, whether people liked the movie or not, there are two things people seem to be taking away from this new superhero movie: Michael Pena's performance and the two after-credits sequences, the latter promised to be bigger and more significant than the ones we've been seeing recently. Which is good, because of late they've been slacking in that department — especially with the last Avengers movie. Hopefully, there's something here at least at the very, very end. Fingers crossed.
