'Outlander' episode 1X13 recap: 'The Watch'

The tense moment as Taran McQuarrie, a member of The Watch, pointed a pistol at Jamie as Claire watched was riveting. When Jenny walked in and diffused the situation by telling Taran was her cousin, I finally breathed as he lowered the pistol. Despite this, Caitriona’s (Claire’s) face didn’t change, which showed her continued apprehensiveness at the situation. It was clear that Jamie and Claire weren’t pleased when Jenny invited Taran and the other Watch members to have dinner with them.

Jamie yelling at Jenny for inviting them to dinner despite the price on his head was warranted, but a but loud as Claire rightfully pointed out. Then, as Ian and Jenny explained that making the Watch happy was the best recourse, Jamie calmed down, but still clearly wasn’t happy.

It was clear that Jamie was trying to remain inconspicuous at dinner by staying quiet, but he couldn’t escape Taran’s questions. It looked like Taran didn’t trust Jenny’s explanation of who he was, but as Jamie spoke and Ian chimed in, you could see that Taran started to like Jamie.

Sam’s (Jamie’s) facial expressions when he put out the hay wagon fire the other Watch members started were stirring. You could feel his fury at having to cow tow to them. When Taran came along after Jamie whipped all of the Watch members and yelled at them NOT Jamie, it was clear that Taran liked and respected Jamie. Then, Taran asking Jamie to join the Watch solidified that.

When Horrocks arrived, Jamie’s fear that he would reveal the price on his head was crystal clear on Sam’s (Jamie’s) face. When he didn’t, you could also see that Jamie knew he wanted something in exchange for his silence.

That Jamie immediately told Claire about Horrock’s arrival showed that they were really becoming a married couple who tell each other everything. That Claire told Jamie that whatever happened, that they would handle it…together displayed her belief they could overcome anything together.

Jenny and Claire washing clothes and talking showed them beginning to bond as sisters-in-law. Jenny finally seemed to soften her feelings toward Claire, which was nice. So when Jenny started having labor pains, her taking Claire’s suggestion to sit down and her soothing comments after telling Jenny that the baby was turned the wrong way seemed more believable. Also, that Jenny trusted Claire to not tell Ian so he wouldn’t worry showed that she had begun to trust her.

Jamie and Horrocks meeting displayed Jamie’s determination to keep his family safe at any cost.

Claire asking Jenny what is was like being pregnant showed Claire’s vulnerability on the subject. When they were told the midwife couldn’t come to deliver the baby because she had taken ill, you could see some fear on Claire’s face that she couldn’t do it alone, but then as Jenny moaned, Caitriona’s (Claire’s) expression immediately changed to one of determination to safely deliver the baby and make sure Jenny survived, despite Jenny thinking she wouldn’t and telling Claire to take care of both Ian and the baby when she was gone.

Having Ian tell Jamie to take the money his and Jenny’s father left them to pay off Horrocks showed that he really cares about Jamie. Also, that he doesn’t enjoy cow-towing to the Watch, but that it’s in exchange for their protection, showed that Ian also makes sacrifices to protect his family.

When Claire confesses to Jamie that she might not be able to give him a child, their true love and bond really came through. Sam’s (Jamie’s) tender facial expressions conveyed how much he loves Claire no matter what. The gentle way he held her made my heart melt.

When Ian kills Horrocks during his (Horrocks) meeting with Jamie illustrated how he loves Jamie like a brother and would do anything for him.

When Claire found the wooden snake Jamie and Jenny’s deceased brother, William carved for him and told her its significance, I thought that showed even more how Jenny had begun to trust Claire. When Jenny told Claire to give it to Jamie after she was gone, Claire’s warm expression turned back to determination as she told Jenny that she could give it to him herself.

Then when Taran told Jamie and Ian that he knew Horrocks was dead, but thought that Jamie NOT Ian killed him because they knew each other, the stone cold face on both Ian and Jamie were perfect. Then, when Taran implied that Jamie had to join the Watch in exchange for his silence and he agreed, it again showed his willingness to protect his family at all costs. That Ian insisted on coming again showed his love for Jamie.

It was sweet how Claire threatened Jamie to come back soon. I would have liked one more passionate love scene before he left.

On the road, Taran’s respect for Jamie was even more apparent as they chatted. When they were attacked by the Redcoats, the slow motion was perfect to intensify the scene.

Claire’s sensitivity with Jenny’s newborn daughter was touching. Yet, you could still see her worry that Jamie and Ian still hadn’t returned.

Claire’s voiceover that it had been three days and no sign off Jamie or Ian showed her deep worry. When she saw men coming down the road, but not their faces, again the slow motion of both Claire and Jenny running conveyed their mutual worry splendidly.

Claire’s pain that Jamie wasn’t with Ian and the other Watch member who returned was palpable. When Ian explained that Jamie was captured by the Redcoats, you could see Claire’s utter panic, which again displayed how deeply she loves Jamie.
