Cannes: 'Dheepan' wins Palme d'Or, Rooney Mara ties for Best Actress

Cannes 2015 comes to a close today, and with that comes the awards. The Coen brothers-led jury awarded Dheepan the Palme d'Or, the top prize, while Rooney Mara received Best Actress for Carol, a prize she tied with Emmanuel Bercot for Mon Roi.

There were 19 film eligible for the top prize, as found on the Cannes website, but Jacques Audiard's (A Prophet, Rust and Bone) drama won the main award. Winning the Grand Prix prize, or essentially second place, was Laszlo Nemes' Holocaust drama and directorial debut Son of Saul, with the jury prize, more or less third place, going to Yorgos Lanthimos' (Dogtooth, Alps) dark comedy The Lobster.

Meanwhile, Hsiao-Hsien Hou won Best Director for The Assassin, his first movie in eight years. Michel Franco won Best Screenplay for Chronic, which starred Tim Roth. Vincent Lindon won Best Actor for The Measure of a Man and Camera d'Or, Cannes award for best first feature film, went to La Tierra Y la Sombra.

In addition to Joel and Ethan Coen, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sienna Miller, Guillermo Del Toro, Sophie Marceau, Xavier Dolan, Rokia Traore and Rossy de Palma filled out the jury this year. The Coens are Palme d'Or winners themselves for Barton Fink.

In addition to the films in contention, other premieres in this year's festival also included the premieres of Mad Max: Fury Road, Inside Out and Woody Allen's Irrational Man, just to name a few. It opened with La Tete haute on April 13. Among the most headline-heavy events of this year's festivals is Gus Van Sant's Michael McConaughey-starring Sea of Trees getting booed, the first footage from Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight and also Shoegate.
