Your Guide To Television Reboots: 11 in development, from 'Full House' to 'Uncle Buck'

The broadcast networks have apparently decided to give up trying to catch up cable networks when it comes to creativity. As a result, rather than develop new projects, we are seeing even more reboots of popular TV classics. Even movies are getting “rebooted” as television shows.

While the broadcast networks are definitely guilty of reboots, there are some in development at cable networks. The most famous one is Twin Peaks, which originally aired on ABC, but is being developed for Showtime as the series is owned by CBS. Disney is also looking to bring back DuckTales on its DisneyXD network.

This week, even more reboots were announced. Just today, news broke that ABC is working on a new Muppets series, which is fantastic. And yesterday, there was news that Netflix has picked up a Full House sequel series.

With all these projects in the works, we can’t blame you for losing track of them all. So, we’ve come up with this handy guide for some of the reboots that are in the works. We may have missed one or two, considering how many have been announced in recent months.

Twin Peaks

Last fall, Showtime announced that it would bring back David Lynch and Mark Frost’s beloved cult series Twin Peaks. Lynch is expected to direct every new episode and it is expected to start in 2016. Kyle MacLanahan is set to play Agent Cooper once again.

Uncle Buck

ABC is currently developing a TV series based on John Hughes’ Uncle Buck, which starred the late John Candy. The network is going with an African American family and has cast Mike Epps in the title role.

Charmed

It’s not clear if this one is still happening, but just after the ill-fated Murder She Wrote reboot was announced in 2013, CBS announced a Charmed reboot. There hasn’t been much news on the project since, although Shannen Doherty told Digital Spy in September 2014 that she doesn’t really support the idea.

Law & Order

Just last month, it was reported that NBC was considering a limited series reboot of Law & Order. Considering that one more season would break the show’s tie with Gunsmoke for the longest-running TV series in history, it would be great to see it come back. There’s not much details on the project, but Chris Noth and Sam Waterston were both reportedly asked to come back.

Magic School Bus

This is another one that was just kind of announced and is still leaving fans hanging. In June 2014, Netflix announced that it was bringing back Magic School Bus, but there hasn’t been anything heard since. Apparently, it would be a “modernized version” of the series, but we’re pretty sure that the Magic School Bus doesn’t age.

Wet Hot American Summer

Speaking of Netflix, here’s one reboot we know is happening. Rather than order a sequel, Netflix has ordered a mini-series based on the cult hit movie Wet Hot American Summer. It will be available this summer and - insanely enough- most of the film’s original cast will be coming back. Jon Hamm, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig and Jason Schwartzman are even joining the cast, in case your mind isn’t blown yet.

The X-Files

Another reboot we know is happening is The X-Files. Fox officially greenlit a six-episode revival, complete with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning. Creator Chris Carter is also returning to oversee. Fox is also dreaming of a Prison Break reboot and might bring back 24 again.

Coach

Craig T. Nelson apparently needed something to do after NBC’s Parenthood wrapped, so he’s decided to return to the role of Coach Hayden Fox for a Coach reboot. While the show originally aired on ABC, since it is a Universal TV production, it will return on NBC. Nelson is the only member of the cast signed on to return, but original creator Barry Kemp is writing the script.

Full House

After John Stamos pushed for it, a Full House reboot is finally happening, but it will have a surprising subject. Netflix is in talks to order Fuller House, which will star Candace Cameron-Bure returning as D.J. Tanner. Stamos, Bob Saget and Dave Coulier might make cameos and creator Jeff Franklin will be working on the series.

The Muppet Show

Just reported on today, it appears that ABC and Disney have finally woken up. The Muppets belong on television. The Big Bang Theory’s Bill Prady is reportedly making a pilot presentation and the hope is that he gets a straight-to-series order. Randall Einhorn (Wilfred) will be the showrunner.

DuckTales

Lastly, Disney also announced in February that DuckTales is getting revived, which is really something we need. The new series will air on DisneyXD and will debut in 2017. It will be refreshing to see Scrooge McDuck and Donald’s nephews on TV again.
