This week’s column talks about a wide range of movies from varying genres from horror to action to comedy. Sinister 2 follows a young mother and her twin sons, who move into a house that brings death to its occupants. Survivor details the plight of a Foreign Service Officer charged with preventing terrorist attacks on the US, but must go on the run when she’s framed for crimes she did not commit. Masterminds chronicles the scheme of a night guard at an armored car company as he plans one of the biggest bank heists in US history. Each film has top drawer celebrities in their casts, which is sure to bring crowds of moviegoers to their local theaters on their opening days. Jump out of your seat scares, larger than life explosions and uproarious comedy fill each of these film’s plots.
Sinister 2 is the sequel to the hit 2012 original, which starred Ethan Hawke. This go around stars Shannyn Sossamon as a young mother who moves into a rural home with her twin sons unbeknownst to the fact that the house brings death anyone who lives in it. The trailer for this terrifying sequel shows how the children begin to see strange things and are targeted by an evil spirit who has killed families who have lived in the house before and now seeks to claim the two boys as his next victims. It opens in theaters on Friday, August 21.
Survivor is an action/thriller starring Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan, Emma Thompson, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett, James D’Arcy and Roger Rees. A Foreign Services Officer in London (Jovovich) is tasked with preventing terrorist attacks in the US, but when she learns of a planned attack on New York City, she’s framed for crimes she didn’t commit and must go in the run. The actioner’s trailer demonstrates Jovovich’s proven skill at handling high-octane action/fight scenes as she outwits numerous snipers, killers and one of the most lethal assassins in the world (Brosnan.) It opens in theaters on Friday, May 29.
Masterminds is a comedy starring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, and Devin Ratray. Based on the 1997 Loomis Fargo Robbery in North Carolina, the film illustrates the preparation and fumbles of David (Galifianakis,) who is a guard for an armored car company, as he and his team of friends plan and (amazingly) execute the heist of $17 million, the largest recorded robbery in US history. The flick’s trailer depicts his strategy to rob a local bank with some help and the hilarious misadventures that occur along the way to his idea’s ultimate fruition and victory. It opens in theaters on Friday, August 7.
