Ever wish that you could bottle up the spontaneity and high energy of a jam session to uncork at your leisure? Then Simple Gifts by The Susan Krebs Chamber Band is the next best thing.
The main thing that distinguishes this album from most material out there is the unique approach in which it was recorded. But before I get to that, a little background is necessary. Chamber music developed alongside classical music, where a small group of musicians would perform in small venues or residences without a conductor. Essentially, the artists would play for their own pleasure and bounce creative ideas off one another, much like what artists do at a jam session.
Vocalist Susan Krebs and a close group of friends (who also happen to be incredibly talented musicians) practice this tradition through the music salons or “Theme Scenes” held in her home. Basically what they do is delve into a theme through music, poetry and spoken word in this intimate setting. The result is something like Simple Gifts, an album of songs from the Great American Songbook (albeit some of the lesser known ones) with a new jazz twist.
As a whole, the record features superb performances from very gifted artists with Krebs leading the charge. Their synergy is flawless, making the album’s eight compositions quite memorable. However, it’s Krebs’ vocal styling which takes this CD to the next level. She has an understanding of the nuances each piece requires. Furthermore, her unbelievable control while executing a song ensures a confident delivery of the lyric every time. Although she favors a stage whisper, just because she doesn’t belt out the notes doesn’t mean her voice isn’t powerful. I can assure you, she’s the real deal.
All the tracks on the record are gems in their own right, but a few definitely stand out. The opening number “Let’s Call A Heart A Heart” immediately brings the South to mind - country jazz if you will. Easy going and with swinging blues, it definitely charms the listener from the first note. Another favorite is “So Many Stars,” the Sergio Mendes Latin standard which relaxes your mind with its pleasant-sounding, romantic vibes. And of course, the highlight is undoubtedly “Throw It Away,” a tribute to Abbey Lincoln’s rendition which will in fact render you speechless. It opens with a tango-like feel before the Arabic rhythms begin to permeate the piece. The band’s playing is impeccable, but it doesn’t overpower the passion and purity in Krebs’ voice. Truly, a stunning work of art.
Overall, Simple Gifts presents music fans with fresh and beautiful music, made all the more appealing by Krebs’ glorious voice. These artists have succeeded in preserving the jam session tradition and making it come to life for contemporary jazz audiences.
