'The Red Road' Season 2, Episode 1: 'Gifts' review

Kopus finds new conflicts and surprises at home. The Lenape tribe finally receives federal recognition. Harold has his hands full, as the citizens of Walpole make no effort to mask their anger and resentment of the tribe’s new official status.

This was a very slow burn for the new season of The Red Road. We find Kopus and Harold conspiring together and co-opting their stories after the events of last season’s finale. The cops beat the bloodied Kopus in the first interrogation room while Harold is being praised in the other. The episode sets up a couple of things and reestablish some of the old events from season one.

First, Jean is still worried about the boy she hit last season. We see her carry gifts to the house of the victim. We also learn that the boy made a full recovery from the hit and run accident. Second, Harold is now a Lieutenant and wants to get his officers to like him. Third, the Lenape are now a sovereign state and there are debates about the future of the tribe and a casino being on the land.

The season starts off with a murder. The Lenape chief, Mac, was murdered in front of his home and Kopus was the first to find him. Beside Mac’s body was a bag of cash that may or may not be connected to the killers. Kopus takes the bag and then Junior shows up. This episode also focused on the budding relationship between Mac and Junior. So Junior will be on a manhunt to find the killer.

This episode sets up the hunt for Mac’s killer plotline, Kopus’ attempt to prove his innocence, and Harold’s new job and his dark secret shared with Kopus. Harold and Kopus will work together more this season.

As a first episode, this was a slow burn but it was necessary to set the tone for the season. I can’t wait to see what happens.
