'The Lego Movie' directors to write, produce Spider-Man animated movie

Between the first Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 and 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have done no wrong as directors. With that, Sony proudly announced at CinemaCon Wednesday night the dynamic duo filmmakers will helm an upcoming animated retelling of Spider-Man, to swing into theaters on July 20, 2018.

The surprising news comes from a press release found on Slashfilm. Tom Rothman, Sony's new chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, unveiled the project news. This animated feature exists independently of the live-action Marvel/Sony pictures past and upcoming, and it's unclear where in Spidey's timeline this film takes place.

In addition to directing, Lord and Miller produce and write the story treatment. They are said to be "masterminding" Sony's new feature, with Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal also on board as producers.

This means Spider-Man comes back less than a year to the big screen after his new Marvel independent film, to be released on July 28, 2017. He'll first be seen in his new variation, if briefly, in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016. The titular character in the live-action superhero film has not yet cast.

A new Spider-Man film is just one project Lord and Miller work on at the moment. Still in the superhero world, they help write the new Flash movie, also set to be released in 2018. In animation, they write and produce The Lego Movie Sequel and the upcoming, untitled Lego Batman movie. They also produce the Lego-themed Ninjago.

Lord and Miller also produce The Last Man on Earth, which was renewed for a second season earlier this month.

They also said to be involved in a Greatest American Hero reboot, but little word has come of that since it was announced last August.
