'Super Troopers 2' raised $4.4 million as Indiegogo campaign ends

Initially with a $2 million goal in mind, Broken Lizard's Super Troopers 2 campaign more than doubled their original plans. The sequel hit $4.4 million as the 30-day fundraiser came to a close Friday.

The Indiegogo page first went live on March 24, with 32 days to make the money needed to have their movie shot then distributed by Fox Searchlight, who also released the first film. With this, Super Troopers 2 becomes the second most successful crowdfunding campaign for a movie ever, a title that originally belonged to Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here.

Once the movie overcame its original $2 million plans in a mere day, the comedy group added stretch goals, with the last earned was a second free mystery perk to the contributors. The next goal was to have live bears on set if Super Troopers 2 made $4.5 million. Such plans, of course, were not met.

Production begins this summer, which marks 14 years since the original was released. Pre-production starts next month according to Variety.

With its budget, SUper Troopers 2 has over $3 million more at its disposal than the original, which had a $1.2 million production. There were over 50,000 contributors to the new film.
