The St. Louis Rams picked up defensive tackle Michael Brockers’ fifth-year option on Monday.
The deadline for exercising the fifth-year options on the first round draft picks in 2012 is May 3. Brockers will now be with the Rams through the 2016 season. If the Rams don’t re-sign Brockers before the 2016 season, then he will make $6.146 million that year, according to ESPN.
Last year the Rams exercised the fifth-year option on defensive end Robert Quinn. They signed Quinn to a contract extension last September.
Brockers was drafted by the Rams in 2012. He then signed a four-year, $9.52 million contract with the Rams. Last year he had 73 tackles and two sacks, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
In 2013 he had 75 tackles and five and a half sacks, which are career-highs. Brockers has 109 tackles, 11.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in his NFL career.
The Rams didn’t use the option on safety Mark Barron. The fifth-year option would have been more expensive for the Rams if they had used it on Barron. Barron had 23 tackles, three sacks, and a pass breakup in nine games with the Rams last year. Barron will be an unrestricted free agent in 2016 if the Rams don’t re-sign him.
