Meryl Streep funds screenwriting lab for women over 40

It's no secret how Meryl Streep swept the world of acting, but the actress has used her influence to help another filmmaking form. She funded a screenwriters lab for women over 40, to be run by New York Women in Film and Television and IRIS.

The announcement of Streep's involvement came from a Tribeca Film Festival panel discussion Sunday, as Variety reported. Submissions for the initiative, called the Writer's Lab, will be accepted from May 1-June 1. The eight winning scribes are to be named on August 1.

It was not announced just how much Streep donated, but the organization said she donated a "significant" contribution.

Additionally, the mentors for this group include writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights), writers Kirsten Smith (Legally Blonde) and Jessica Bendinger (Bring It On) and producer Caroline Kaplan (Boyhood). It's a retreat which will take place in uptown New York.

As an actress, Streep last was seen in Into the Woods. She'll be seen later this year in Suffragette and Ricki and the Flash.
