'Kung Fu Panda 3' moves up to January 2016 release

Po and friends high kick their way into theaters early next year. It was just announced Kung Fu Panda 3 has moved its release up from March 18, 2016 to January 29, 2016.

ComingSoon.net has the news. This news comes just a little less than two months after Alessandro Carloni boarded the project as co-director alongside Jennifer Yuh (Kung Fu Panda 2) to get the third Kung Fu Panda movie moving in a fashionable pace, for marketing and other reasons. This was a decision Yuh, not the studio, requested. It appears he's done the trick.

This is at least the third release date Kung Fu Panda 3 has had, after it was initially set for a Christmas-friendly release, before Star Wars: The Force Awakens scarred it back to March. It still remains DreamWorks Animation's next film, after this year's Home. While that feature is having much better success than the last handful of DreamWorks Animation pictures, they really want to have another full-out hit. They've stacked their schedule with mainly established properties up until 2018. This has left a number of announced projects in limbo, including B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations.

Kung Fu Panda 3 now goes head-to-head with the Chris Pine-starring drama The Finest Hours, the YA film The 5th Wave and an untitled New Line Cinema horror film. The animated sequel features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Bryan Cranston, David Cross, Michelle Yeoh, Danny McBride, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, Gary Oldman, Mads Mikkelsen and James Hong. While a January release is usually a kiss of death for studios, the fact that DreamWorks Animation moved the movie up suggests some confidence in their next movie. One can only hope.
