Kansas freshman forward Kelly Oubre announced on Wednesday that he’s entering the NBA draft after one year in college.
The announcement was made by a news release and a Youtube video. Oubre is projected as a mid-first-round pick with a chance to hit the lottery, according to Yahoo Sports. It may take some time for Oubre to have an impact in the NBA. However he has the ability to become a prototypical NBA small forward.
"This is an opportunity to play against the best in the world and expand my game in hopes of someday becoming one of those great players," Oubre said. "It's been a great year. I've been blessed to be here at the University of Kansas. I was blessed to go through the things that I went through and I was blessed to play for coach [Bill Self]. He taught me a lot this year, the little things that will help out my game a lot."
Oubre was one of the country’s most highly touted freshman when he arrived at Kansas. He averaged 9.3 points and five rebounds and helped Kansas win the Big 12 championship in his only college season, according to the Kansas City Star. Oubre becomes the sixth Kansas freshman in the last six years to enter the NBA draft. He joins Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, and Xavier Henry among the freshmen who have entered the draft after their freshman year.
Despite Oubre leaving, Kansas still has depth at the wing position. Wayne Selden, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk and Brannen Greene will probably be back next season. Kansas is also in pursuit of consensus top-five recruit Jaylen Brown.
