Marvel donates the public domain for the moment thanks to Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Warner Bros. plans to change that soon. They'll debut the first Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice footage this Thursday, with the trailer debut coming ahead of time in theaters on April 20.
The news comes from Latino Review, via Instagram, who states Zack Synder, the director of the upcoming superhero movie, debuts the first five seconds of the trailer at 9 a.m. on Thursday on his Twitter. This is just an hour before the start of Star Wars celebration. Then, you can sign up to view the full theater in theaters this Monday, April 20, or see it before Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1. Something of a slap in the face to those at Marvel, it seems, but it's unlikely they care, as they'll make billions anyway. Plus, any press is good press.
The 20th and May 1 firsts like a long gap, unless you consider how Avengers: Age of Ultron premieres in theaters across the country as early as April 22. Chances are, this puppy gets bootlegged if it also premieres in those theaters, so Warner Bros. wants to give fans here in the States as good a look at it as possible before such a thing happens.
This news contradicts early reports which stated the first trailer would premiere before Warner Bros.' Mad Max: Fury Road on May 15. It would make sense why Warner Bros. would put their highly anticipated trailer over one of their biggest projects. But at the same time they probably want a bigger audience to get hyped by this trailer—Avengers: Age of Ultron is PG-13 while the new Mad Max is R—and a Batman v Superman trailer would likely interest the Avengers crowd more than the Mad Max folks, even if they are die-hard Marvel fans.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice flies into theaters, in its entirety, on March 25, 2016.
