David Duchovny says he always wanted 'The X-Files' to return

With The X-Files making its way back to telivision soon, David Duchovny has admitted that he always wanted the show to return.

Fans of the show were highly excited when a series reboot was made official and Duchovny was right with them. Duchovny told Variety that he wasn't sure if he'd get the chance to reprise the role of FBI agent Fox Mulder after The X-Files films weren't as successful as he hoped.

“We always wanted to keep it going,” Duchovny said. “We always envisioned a movie franchise when we stopped the TV show, and we did two — the second one did well, but I guess not well enough to do a third, and we were all kind of disappointed that didn’t happen that way.”

The show will return with a six-episode season but Duchovny didn't rule out the possibility of the show continuing past that. Duchovny noted that shooting a short season is probably best for the actors at this stage of their careers.

The original X-Files series ran from 1993-2002 and followed the cases of two FBI special agents as they investigated paranormal phenomena. Duchovny says he realizes that the show helped popularize the science-fiction and supernatural genre and notes its influences to this day.

“I feel like so many shows have come out of ‘The X-Files,'” he said. “So much of not only TV, but film, has taken a turn into science fiction and superheroes. ‘Twilight,’ to me, comes out of ‘The X-Files.’ So I figured, why not us?”

The X-Files reboot begins shooting this summer.
