There's a good chance recent Best Picture winner Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is a film which'll be studied and explored for some time to come. This certainly seems the case at the moment, as this new video gives the movie the Room 237 treatment as it studies many of its flaws—both intentional and not.
The video from De Filmkrant, found on Hollywood Elsewhere, is specifically titled "The Unexpected Virtue of Goofs: Birdman's Shifting Spaces." In it, the inconsistent layout of the building, as well as the use of time and space, are called into question to study what this adds to the character's sense of morality.
As such, the natural comparisons to The Shining come into play, as some obvious homage—like similar floor patterns and a certain mini-recreation of an iconic shot—make it seem logical that Alejandro González Iñárritu's film and Stanley Kubrick's feature have more in common than some may think.
Of course, one can't confirm any of these theories to be true unless the filmmaker outright said these were his intentions. But to do so would take away the fun. Much like Room 237, the fun of the prospect comes not from their accuracy but how they came to such conclusions. Whether or not it's true, to see the evidence and steps towards drawing conclusions is what truly makes this and the aforementioned documentary interesting.
It's likely more of these kind of videos will come as Birdman is now on DVD and its awards fame gives it more attention. For now, however, check out this little four minute comparison:
