Some may not know there's an Angry Birds animated feature in the works, but the figureheads behind it really hope people show up regardless. As recent reports reveal, the marketing and budget of the film will cost at least $185 million.
These numbers come from Cineuropa, via The Playlist. Ponying up this cash is Rovio Entertainment, whose CEO Pekka Rantala notes, "You can accuse us of many things, but not of lack of courage."
Indeed, they seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket — no pun intended — but it's easy to understand why. While not nearly the craze it was years ago, the Angry Birds name is still a marketing highpoint for young children, and when it comes out May 20, 2016 that's not likely to change too much. At the very least, Rantala and his Rovio team hope as much.
“The film is getting very positive reactions from major retail and licensing partners, as well as from consumer focus groups, which will have a positive impact on licensing in the coming years. We expect some major announcements of partnerships," Rantala also noted.
What started back in 2009 with the mobile game, Angry Birds has since became the No. 1 paid app of all time. With over one billion downloads crossed in the past seven months, it now has a Angry Birds Star Wars saga app, 27.5 million Facebook fans, 1.6 billion YouTube views and a TV series Angry Birds Toons, which soon will reach 5 billion views itself.
Announced back in 2012, the Angry Birds 3D CGI movie comes from Sony and Rovio and features the voices of Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, Peter Dinklage, Jason Sudeikis, Keegan Michael-Key, Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Burress, Maya Rudolph, Cristela Alonzo, Jillian Bell, Danielle Brooks, Romeo Santos, and the stars of YouTube's Smosh. It's directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly.
