Director Jared Hess hasn't excelled in his filmmaking career since Napoleon Dynamite back in 2004. Now over a decade later, he may have found salvation in stars like Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis. They all join him in his latest comedy Masterminds, which had its first trailer released.
The trailer comes courtesy of />Comedy Central, who premiered the promo during the station's Roast of Justin Bieber. Based on a true story, Masterminds follows a simple armored vehicle driver (Galifianakis) who gets persuaded into a scheme to steal $17 million with his crush (Wiig), lead by the equally bumbling criminal leader (Wilson). They surprisingly pull off the heist, but don't get to relish in the profits for long as the money finds itself in even worse hands.
Also starring Ken Marino, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon—which, alongside Wiig, marks the third new Ghostbuster in the new film—Masterminds once starred Jim Carrey in Galifianakis' role back when it was called Loomis Fargo. This comedy is some years in the making, as one can see from the number of screenwriters attached to the film's final screenplay. Those names include Emily Spivey (Up All Night), Hubbel Palmer, Chris Bowman and Jody Hill & Danny McBride. Typically this many writers on one comedy leaves for some messy results, but this trailer is surprisingly strong in bringing the chuckles.
Of course, it's hard to go wrong with such a great cast. Though moviegoers have to determine for themselves how this one turns out when it comes out on August 7. It's also produced by Lorne Michaels, which likely explains all the SNL stars and alums.
Meanwhile, this is one of two films Hess developed for this year. He also recently premiered Don Verdean at Sundance, which Lionsgate acquired for an expected release later this year. It stars Sam Rockwell, Jemaine Clement, Amy Ryan and McBride. Perhaps the connection to the later is what lead him to direct Masterminds, or visa versa?
Hess also recently signed on to direct Disney's Overnight at 42nd Street.
