Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews is done for the year after suffering from a torn Achilles.
Complex reports that the injury happened during a 94-75 win against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night as Matthews fell to the floor in pain without contact. Matthews was carried back into the locker room where an MRI confirmed that his Achilles tendon had been torn.
"I'm sitting up there in that tube having an MRI, and I don't hear noise, I don't feel my Achilles," Matthews said. "I'm just…I can't believe I'm up there while my team's battling. I just haven't processed it all yet."
The recovery time for a torn achilles is usually around eight to nine months. According to Yahoo Sports, Matthews isn't accustomed to missing time as he's played in 142 consecutive games and had a previous streak of 250.
The loss of Matthews is devastating for the Trail Blazers as they gear up for the playoffs. Matthews has averaged 16 points per game this season along with shooting around 40 percent from 3-point range, making him one of the league's best shooters from behind the arc. In his place the Blazers hope that recently acquired guard Arron Afflalo can fill the role in the starting lineup.
The Trail Blazers are currently the third seed in the tightly contested Western Conference with a 41-19 record.
