This week’s column includes films from very different movie genres from comedy to horror to family oriented. Pixels is a comedy where aliens misconstrue video feeds they receive of classic Arcade games as a declaration of war so they attack Earth. Before I Wake is a thriller where a couple, who already lost a child of their own, adopts an orphaned child, whose dreams and nightmares then start coming true in real life, putting the child and his new parents in grave danger. Finally, Max is a family motion picture revolving around a dog that helped US Marines in Afghanistan, who returns to the US and is adopted by his handler’s family after his death. All three films have their own spin on their how they illustrate their genre to audiences. In addition, all three flicks have a good amount of celebrity star power, which is sure to boost ticket sales on each motion picture’s opening day.
Pixels is an action/science fiction comedy starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Jane Krakowski, HBO’s Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan, Sean Bean, Josh Gad, ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson, Brian Cox and Lainie Kazan. The film’s plot centers around aliens, who misinterpret video transmissions of classic Arcade games as Earth’s declaration of war on them so they in turn attack Earth, in traditional Arcade game style. The flick’s teaser trailer shows how NASA sent a time capsule into space in 1982 hoping it would reach other life forms. It was filled with examples of Earth’s life and culture. Unfortunately, it’s taken the wrong way and aliens wage war on Earth using iconic Arcade game characters like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. The special effects are spectacular as Sandler’s character and others try to save the world from classic Arcade game villains. It opens in theaters on Friday, July 24.
Before I Wake is a horror/thriller where an adopted orphaned child’s dreams and nightmares come through into reality. Starring Annabeth Gish, Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay and Showtime’s Ray Donovan’s Dash Mihok. The movie tells the story of an orphaned little boy, named Cody, who is adopted by Jessie and Mark (Bosworth and Jane, respectively) who lost a child themselves. Then, the young boy’s dreams and nightmares begin to come through into real life. The motion picture’s trailer illustrates how Cody’s (Tremblay) dreams begin to appear in reality, some are exquisite and happy, while others are dangerous and very disturbing. Meanwhile, Cody and his new parents fight against his nightmares, which threaten to destroy them all. It opens in theaters on Friday, May 8.
Max is a family film starring NBC’s Parenthood’s Lauren Graham, Robbie Amell of The CW’s defunct science fiction television series The Tomorrow People, Thomas Haden Church and Jay Hernandez of Fox’s cancelled crime drama television series Gang Related. In this feel good film, a dog who aided US Marines over in Afghanistan is returned home to the US and adopted by his handler’s family following his handler’s death. The movie’s trailer displays how the dog helps the family heal after their loss and they also help him cope with the loss of his master and friend. It’s filled with heartwarming and poignant moments that will make moviegoers smile and cry. It opens in theaters on Friday, June 26.
