Top 10 'Star Trek' mind melds

In honor of the late Leonard Nimoy, better known to many as Spock from the original Star Trek series, TheCelebrityCafe.com has compiled a list of mind melding scenes.

For those of you who are not as familiar with Star Trek, Spock was the first officer of the star ship USS Enterprise. He was only half human. His mother was human, but his father was from the planet Vulcan. Vulcans are extremely intelligent, and prize their logical reasoning to the point of shunning emotions. As a testament to his human side, Spock sometimes struggled with suppressing his emotions. Conversely, it was his superior logical ability that made him the influential voice of reason in Captain Kirk’s decision making, balancing the more emotional responses of chief medical officer, Dr. “Bones” McCoy, whose opinion was also highly valued by Captain Kirk.

There are a few iconic Spock mannerisms and actions, one of which is how he would arch his already high swept eyebrow whenever he commented that something was “highly illogical.” Another was his peaceful hand gesture in which the index finger and middle finger were pressed together and the ring finger and pinky finger were pressed together so that the fingers of the hand formed a “V.” This was the symbol for, and usually accompanied by the salutation “Live long and prosper.” He could also knock a person out by “pinching” a pressure point at the base of the neck and upper shoulder, and of course, perform the Vulcan mind meld.

In addition to repressing emotions, Vulcans possess remarkable telepathic capabilities. Not only can they “read” thoughts, but they can project their thoughts as well. This ability to mix their thoughts with others is generally conducted through touch and is called the Vulcan mind meld. Throughout the original Television series and the resulting film franchise, there are several notable mind melds conducted by Spock.
