Center JaVale McGee has been waived by the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday.
On Sunday the 76ers and McGee’s representatives started having buyout talks. McGee was able to get released without having to give back any of his $11.2 million salary for this season and his $12 million salary for next season, according to USA Today. When he clears waivers, McGee will be a free agent and will be able to sign with any team.
"I don't want to get bought out," McGee said after being traded to the 76ers, ESPN notes. "That's not a positive thing. When you think about it, you don't get all of your money when you get bought out. So it doesn't make sense why someone would want to get bought out unless they are older -- older and they want to go to a contender or something. I'm not that old. I just want to play basketball."
McGee was drafted by the Washington Wizards. He was acquired by the 76ers from the Denver Nuggets before the February 19 trade deadline. With the 76ers McGee averaged 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds, according to Fox Sports. This season he’s averaging 4.6 points and 2.7 rebounds. McGee has averaged 8.4 points and 5.5 rebounds in his seven-year NBA career.
It will be interesting to see where McGee ends up as a few contending teams making playoff pushes could use a player of his ilk.
