Pharrell spoke out for the first time about the lawsuit by the family of Marvin Gaye on his and Robin Thicke's hit single "Blurred Lines".
Pharrell and Thicke were recently ordered to pay Marvin Gaye's family close to $7.4 million for copying the deceased singer's song "Got to Give it Up". "Pharrell told Financial Times that the decision is harmful to creativity citing that artists can no longer be inspired by other art.
"If we lose our freedom to be inspired, we’re going to look up one day and the entertainment industry as we know it will be frozen in litigation," Pharrell said. "This is about protecting the intellectual rights of people who have ideas.'”
Pharrell's comments come a day after Gaye's family released a statement of their own. The family told The Wrap that the lawsuit would have been avoidable if a procedure was done before the song's release.
Pharrell and Thicke have maintained their innnocence in the case. Thicke's lawyer told Rolling Stone that the two will rest easy knowing they didn't copy Gaye's song and said they're considering appealing the lawsuit.
