Netflix greenlights 'The OA' from 'Sound of My Voice' writers Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij

Netflix has big plans to release and create original content in 2015, and by no means are they slowing down. As they pick up projects left and right, they've just added their next selection to the pile. They just greenlighted The OA, a new series from Sound of My Voice writers Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij.

The news of this comes from an official press release. The release, found on Deadline, reveals The OA contains eight one-hour episodes which all premiere sometime in 2016. The plot is kept under wraps at the moment, but reports suggest a mystery element is involved.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Marling and Batmanglij continue their working relationship as writers, while Marling continues to work in front of the camera for The OA as an actress and Batmanglij behind it as he directs Netflix's latest dramatic series.

Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, two Oscar-winning producers of 12 Years a Slave, and Michael Sugar, a producer behind The Knick, are executive producers on The OA under their Plan B and Anonymous Content banners, respectively. Marling and Batmanglij also are executive producers on the project as well.

“We are thrilled to be the home of the first television series Brit and Zal create together,” Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix, said in the release. “Whether in front of or behind the camera, or both, their creative voice is always uniquely captivating.”

The OA is the third collaboration between Batmanglij and Marling, following the aforementioned Sound of My Voice and also The East, which starred Alexander Skarsgard and Ellen Page in addition to Marling.

Netflix has multiple new series in the works or set to premiere soon, including Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Daredevil, the Kyle Chandler-starring Bloodline, the Wachowskis'Sense8, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events series and Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down.

Those are just the new ones, and not including the recent return of House of Cards, nor the upcoming returns of Orange is the New Black, Marco Polo and the fourth season of Longmire.

In addition to their now-prolific TV line-up, Netflix also recently acquired the film Beasts of No Nations, from True Detective director Cary Fukunaga and also just yesterday signed a deal with Leonardo DiCaprio to make new environmental documentaries with the actor under their production house.
