Running back Mark Ingram has agreed to a deal that will keep him with the New Orleans Saints.
According to ESPN, the deal is for four years and is worth $16 million. Ingram would have become a free agent next week if a deal hadn’t been reached. The Saints knew that if Ingram became a free agent, he would get interest from rival teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, NFL.com notes. Saints coach Sean Payton said this week that Ingram was "someone that we want to keep."
Ingram was drafted by the Saints in 2011. The Saints decided to not use Ingram’s option for 2015 before the start of last season. Last year Ingram, who is a Heisman Trophy winner, had a breakout year. He rushed for 964 yards, which is a career-high, and nine touchdowns, and had 145 yards receiving, according to the Associated Press. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time.
Ingram has 2,426 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns in his career. He also has 53 career receptions for 288 yards.
The Saints have released running back Pierre Thomas, which could mean that Ingram will get more passes thrown to him. The move will save the Saints at least $1.735 million.
