Another day, another celebrity says Martin Scorsese makes his next movie. This time it's Kenneth Branagh, who confirms he and the Taxi Driver director talked about bringing his stage production of Macbeth into an "impressionistic" film experience.
Talking on Kermode and Mayo's Film Review on BBC Radio, Branagh gave an update on the project. While there to promote his own directorial effort Cinderella, the conversation switched to the potential film, where the actor revealed they were "practically there."
"We will remount the production and all things being well Mr. Scorsese will direct a film version of that production," he continued. "Fingers are hovering above pieces of paper. Everybody wants to do it, it's just a question of schedules. I'm very hopeful it's going to happen."
Rumors Scorsese would make a film version first came back in January from the Daily Mail, who noted how "informal conversations" came about between the actor and filmmaker about this project. Scorsese was quite taken by the Manchester International Festival production when it came to New York in the summer of 2013.
Should this Macbeth film be made, Branagh notes it's "very impressionistic" and "very abstract." As the stage production was designed to place audiences in the midst of the action, mere inches from the performers, Scorsese wants that experience brought to the screen in unique and interesting ways. As far as production time, it's not clear how long it would take to get this film off the ground, shot and ready to go according to the actor.
This is also having to combat with the upcoming Macbeth film production set to be released this year, under the Weinstein Company and starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. There's a good chance that may interrupt plans if it's super successful, either financially or in the awards circuit.
Of course, both filmmakers are busy at the moment. Branagh still promotes his Disney film then works on a West End stage production of Romeo and Juliet starring his Cinderella stars Lily James and Richard Madden. Scorsese, meanwhile, is hard at work in Taiwan as he films his long-in-development Silence, starring Liam Neeson, Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield.
Scorsese also has a slew of films and TV projects in the works. He recently reunited with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro for a short film/casino commercial to be released this summer. He also shot the pilot for his Wolf of Wall Street writer Terrence Winter's untitled rock 'n' roll pilot.
Speaking of TV, he's also involved in a show version of his 2010 film Shutter Island and also the Benico Del Toro-starring Cortes.
Oh, and yes, Mark Wahlberg wants him to make a Boardwalk Empire movie. Plus Jamie Foxx says Scorsese plans to make his upcoming Mike Tyson biopic.
