Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim will retire in three years after nearly 40 years on the job.
According to Sports Illustrated,
the school announced on Thursday that Boeheim will be stepping down. In the statement, Syracuse chancellor Kent Syverud said that Boeheim's decision was made in part to help the program transition to a new era.
"His goal in making this decision and announcement now is to bring certainty to the team and program in the coming years, and enable and plan for a successful, longer-term transition in coaching leadership," said Syverud.
The announcement of Boeheim's impending retirement comes off the heels of a NCAA investigation which found the program violated protocol in academic misconduct, player benefits, and drug policy. Syracuse issued a self-imposed postseason ban prior to the punishments imposed by the NCAA. Boeheim had 108 of his 966 career wins vacated after the investigation.
In 39 seasons, Boeheim has made the NCAA tournament 31 times, reached the Final Four four times, and won the National Championship in 2003.
