Since the success of last year's The Lego Movie, the Lego craze is at an all-time high. Warner Bros. already has three Lego movies in development, and now they have one more: The Billion Brick Race, from Jason Segel and Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pierce.
The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive. The plot is unknown at the moment, but Pierce and Segel signed on to co-write and co-direct the feature. Meanwhile, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors behind The Lego Movie, and Roy Lee and Dan Lin, the producers behind The Lego Movie and the upcoming Lego films Ninjago, The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Movie Sequel, are all producers on The Billion Brick Race.
While Pierce directed the Marvel short film One Shot, this is the first time Segel and Pierce helmed a feature film. Both have experience writing studio films, however. Segel's pen is behind Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppets, The Five-Year Engagement and last year's Sex Tape. And, in addition to the aforementioned Iron Man 3, Pierce wrote this summer's Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation and also is taped to write the Russo brothers' upcoming Ghostbusters movie starring Channing Tatum, who you may remember provided his voice to The Lego Movie.
As this is just the early days on the film, no release date or other info are available. The story, according to reports, is based on a story pitch Pierce gave which made the studio very excited. It's not clear how Segel got involved or if he stars in the upcoming film.
Ninjago, the first Lego Movie spin-off, comes to theaters fall of next year. The Lego Batman Movie, meanwhile, comes May 2017. Then in 2018, The Lego Movie Sequel comes to theaters. However, Lord/Miller don't return to direct like they did for 22 Jump Street, as those duties went to Rob Schrab (Community).
In addition to his behind-the-scenes credits, Segel also has high-profile projects in the works in front of the camera. His well-acclaimed turn as David Foster Wallace in The End of the Tour comes to theaters on July 31.
