Jason Alexander has been picked to replace Larry David on Broadway in Fish in the Dark, which makes perfect sense. After all, Alexander played a character inspired by David for nine years on Seinfeld.
David’s final performance in the show he wrote will be on June 7 at the Cort Theater. On June 9, Alexander will step in to play his role, Norman Drexel. In addition, the show’s run has been extended through July 19, notes The New York Times.
“I left Broadway 25 years ago because Larry David co-created the show that would change my life and career,” Alexander said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “It is totally amazing that he also created the show that would bring me back to Broadway. I am thrilled I get to do this hilarious play for him and with this wonderful cast. It is quite simply more fun than any bald man should have.”
Of course, Alexander played George Costanza on Seinfeld, a role that was inspired by David and acted as his alter ego on the show. Fish in the Dark’s lead character is also very much inspired by David’s own personality, so Alexander should be able to take over seamlessly.
Alexander is no stranger to Broadway. He won a Tony in 1989 for Jerome Robbins’ Broadway. He was supposed to star in Jerry Sterner’s Other People’s Money in Sag Harbor, New York, but had to drop out to do Fish in the Dark.
