Director Neill Blomkamp has a 'really cool' idea for 'District 10,' but says he's not ready to make it

Neill Blomkamp exploded on the scene when he made his feature-debut, the Best Picture-nominated District 9. Since then, his latest efforts, including this weekend's Chappie, haven't quite hit those same marks. He's not opposed, however, to revisiting the world of his first feature.

In fact, according to his recent interview with IGN, he actually has a "really cool" idea for the sequel. Don't expect to see it in theaters anytime soon, however.

“I have an idea for District 10, which is really cool," were Blomkamp's exact words on the matter, followed by the following. "The problem is I feel like Chappie is the end of three films that have a similar stylistic approach to them. Chappie is the odd one out in that is has no socio-political underpinnings. It doesn’t have my experiences as a kid in South Africa incorporated into it. And Elysium – although it doesn’t have my experiences as a kid in South Africa, it has the same notion of oppressor in the elites, and the large population base beneath it. And Chappie doesn’t, but they are still part of a trilogy."

"So moving forward I would love to realize this idea of District 10 – I have every intention to do it, I just need to find the right time to do it – to not go back to Johannesburg and shoot something similar, yet," Blomkamp said on the matter.

As confirmed by the filmmaker himself, District 10 would definitely not be his next film. He's already has an Alien re-imagining in the works with 20th Century Fox, possibly to feature his Chappie star Sigourney Weaver. Little details are known about his new movie, and while some reports suggest it'll ignore the last two Alien movies (though, not Prometheus), others suggest that's not the case.

After such a tremendous debut with District 9 — which starred Sharlto Copley, an actor whose remained with the director through all three of his films — Blomkamp has struggled to find himself as fresh and popular a filmmaker as he was with that first feature. Even he feels like he "f**ked up" his District 9 follow-up Elysium, if just "a little bit." Would District 10 give the director the resurgence he deserves, and prove to fans he's no one-trick pony? It'll have to be seen.

Meanwhile, Blomkamp's Chappie is now in theaters.
