Hannibal Buress is one of the funniest men in comedy right now, and from his appearances on The Daily Show, The Eric Andre Show and Broad City, general audiences have started to get the picture. Therefore, Comedy Central greenlighted Buress' new series Why? With Hannibal Buress.
As the press release, found on Variety, reveals, this new weekly, half-hour eight-episode show finds Buress "answering the burning questions on his mind through stand-up, filmed segments, man-on-the-street interviews and special in-studio guests."
A live studio audience production, Why? tapes the same week it airs, much like HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. It's also executive produced by Buress, alongside Jeff Stilson and Dave Becky of 3 Arts.
“Hannibal kept asking us ‘why’ so we just told him to go find out and we’ll air it,” Kent Alterman, president of content development and original programming at Comedy Central.
Why? comes from Buress' development deal with the station from 2013, as Deadline notes. This includes a pilot commitment, a one-hour stand-up special, a nationwide Comedy Central Live stand-up tour and his role on Broad City. Buress' stand-up special Hannibal Buress Live From Chicago premiered this past May on the station to strong ratings.
"I'm extremely excited to help Comedy Central sell advertising," Buress said on his new show.
Buress, in addition to his stand-up, was also a former writer on Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock. Buress also was recently hired to roast Justin Bieber at the end of the month by Comedy Central. Buress was also the man who brought Bill Cosby's sexual assault allegations to the public at large's attention.
