CBS Sunday Morning's Nancy Giles makes interview awkward after assuming producer Jay Smooth was white.
During All In with Chris Hayes on MSNBC, Hayes invited CBS journalist Nancy Giles and hip-hop producer Jay Smooth on the show for a discussion about Strarbuck's attempt to bring more attention o race.
According to the Daily Intelligencer, during the discussion, Giles tells Smooth that people may mistake the way he speaks with trying to be another race or perhaps that's just where he grew up.
"There would be some people that would feel that you co-opted and other people might feel like that’s his background and that’s really cool, too," Giles said.
Smooth responded by letting Giles know that he is in fact black and that mistake can usually happen.
"It’s also interesting because I’m actually black, but you assumed otherwise. And this is the sort of awkwardness that we can look forward to at Starbucks across America."
FORTUNE reports that Starbucks will give baristas the option to start conversations on race by writing "Race Together" on cups they hand to customers. The goal is to help bring about the topic of race and starting discussions on a daily basis with customers.
Users quickly took to Twitter to criticize this idea.
