Catfish Season 4: Daisy and Marcus

This episode of Catfish was like an M. Night Shyamalan movie!

This episode was pretty straight forward. So, let’s dive right in.
This week’s special co-host was YouTube personality Tyler Oakley.
This week’s Catfish mystery: Daisy and Marcus.
Daisy sent Nev an email with the subject line being “Lost from Unspoken Words.” In the email, Daisy gave Nev the rundown, she met Marcus on Instagram and he asked for her number. They began to text a lot, but they have never spoken verbally or even via video chat.
Nev and Tyler already came to the conclusion that there was a strong possibility that Marcus could be a girl and that’s why she doesn’t want to make a phone call.
Tyler and Nev fly to Charlotte, North Carolina to meet up with Daisy and get more of her story.
Daisy discloses to Tyler and Nev that she has been through a lot. Her sister passed from a car crash and her father died from an aneurysm and stroke while she and the rest of her family drove to pick up her then girlfriend. Because of this, her family, especially her mother, blamed her for the death of her father.
Marcus, was the only stable thing in her life, he was a rock for her.
It was then, that Daisy dropped a bomb on Nev and Tyler; she had spent about two grand on Marcus in clothes and gifts. And she has never heard his voice or received an gift or card in return.
After their conversation with Daisy, Nev and Tyler begin to investigate. They search for the phone number first and they get a hit on the phone number being registered to a lady named Sandra, who is related to someone named Marcus. In the end, Marcus is a real person and that is his Instagram page. But there are a few possibilities:
1. Marcus could possibly be impersonated by someone else.
2. One of his brother’s is talking to Daisy.
3. It could be Sandra (assuming that is the Marcus’ mom) that is talking to Daisy.
4. Or, Marcus could be who she actually is talking to.
Nev calls Daisy to see where she is and give her an update on what they found. They meet up with Daisy, her mom (also named Daisy) and her sister Tracy. Daisy ‘s mom tells Nev and Tyler that she is not happy with what is going on and that she in fact is the one paying for most of the gifts that have been sent to Marcus. Tracy reveals that when their dad passed that Daisy took it extremely hard. The conversation between Nev, Tyler, Daisy and her family proves to be too much for Daisy. She becomes emotional and leaves the room.
Later, Daisy, Nev and Tyler head to a diner where they debrief her on what they found. Now the only thing left to do is to contact Marcus and see if he is willing to meet up with Daisy.
He doesn’t answer, so Nev leaves a message and they decide to meet up with Marcus anyway by using the address that Daisy was using to ship Marcus gifts.
Sometime during the night, Marcus texts Nev and basically says that he is not interested in meeting Daisy on TV and that he will meet up with her on his term.
But a few hours later, he changes his mind and agrees to meet up with Daisy.
But, while Nev, Daisy and Tyler were headed to the plane, Marcus called and decided he didn’t want to meet up with her after all!
Instead of turning around and giving up, the crew decides to get on the plane and head to Ohio anyway.
They reach the hotel and meet up with Daisy in her room and give Marcus one more opportunity to meet Daisy.
He finally agrees.
So, they head to a local park. And wait. And wait, until finally Nev receives a phone call that they have arrived.
Plot twist!
He is real. Marcus is not a catfish. He is just a guy who prefers texts instead of phone calls. He is simply set in his ways and has a comfort zone that he is not comfortable being out of.
The next day, Daisy and Marcus meet up and a coffee shop and talk.
Daisy tells Marcus how she feels and its clear he is flattered, but, his “swerve game was too strong.” He simply is not interested in a relationship. Just a friendship.
After two months, Nev and Tyler Skype with Daisy and get an update on her life, it’s evident that by now, she knows that they are going to just remain friends and she is ok with that.
Marcus feels the exact same way. For him, it’s as simple as this, “can’t dedicate yourself to one type of pizza.”
